Netflix and TiVo Team Up to Fight the Forces of Boredom

You've probably already heard that Netflix has made efforts to transition from envelope-licking and mailbox technology to that new-fangled information super highway. Netflix has teamed up with Samsung, Starz, LG and others to stream movies into your home via Blu-ray players and TVs.

This morning, TiVo announced that they too are teaming up with Netflix to offer an instant movie and TV episode streaming service.

Come December, Netflix's massive movie library will be instantly available to TiVo subscribers. All you couch potatoes have to do now is add a movie to your queue via the TiVo remote, blink once, and the latest Indiana Jones or True Blood will be on your television set. Makes all that opening and sealing of envelopes, walking to the mailbox, and lifting the red flag seem monumentally inconvenient, doesn't it?

TiVo and Netflix have long been power hitters in their respective industries. The ability to watch Iron Man at the touch of a button at 3:30 AM on a Wednesday night is truly a great step forward for humankind. Netflix and TiVo joining forces doesn't just double their power and services. The two companies form a mutually beneficent symbiosis. You know when the individual power ranger vehicles combine to form the unstoppable Megazord? That's about the feeling I get from TiVo and Netflix teaming up.

Who else can offer the goods that the Netflix-TiVo Megazord can? For now, no one. Perhaps an Xbox-PS3-Wii Mechagodzilla would stand a fighting chance, but frankly, I'm not interested. I'm looking forward to burning my mailbox, putting my feet up and streaming every Clint Eastwood western ever made onto my TiVo this December. After Eastwood westerns, I'll move on to Eddie Murphy's 80s standup, and after that, I'll try out some Mad Men episodes. This is going to be a pleasant winter for me.

And all you nay-saying technophobes out there: Don't worry. You can still use the good old Postal Service to get your Netflix movies for the time being. But, realistically, you've got 10 years before snail mail goes the way of the telegraph. Why not adjust to this radical new technology by "streaming" some of our movie reviews onto your computer now?
