Cafedvd.com Reviewer's Comments

Cafédvd is a fun and easy-to-use rental service that seems just behind the curve in the Online DVD rental business. They have a huge selection of specialty lists covering a broad selection of films, which makes their inventory interesting. However, they still impose due dates and late fees and postage is not included on several of their rental options.

Inventory:

At approximately 13,000 titles Cafédvd has considerably fewer movies than our top two choices Netflix and Blockbuster . However, they have a broad selection from obscure independents to popular Hollywood hits.

Membership Features:

Unlike similar services, Cafédvd still charges postage and imposes due dates and late fees on a la carte selections. One rental could cost up to $5.50. They do offer a few pre-paid options that include free shipping. Plans start at six movies a month; however, they do not offer an Unlimited movies a month option.

Cafédvd also offers movies to buy, new and used.

Movie Arrival Time:

Cafédvd is located in San Francisco. The average time for arrival is 2-4 days. If you are renting a la carte selection or are on the SaverPak program, Cafédvd has due dates and starts calculating your return date three days after they ship the movie.

Movie Information:

Cafédvd's movie information includes title, actors, MPAA rating, length, summary and sometimes a trailer or clip. We also found that several, but not all titles, included links to critics reviews.

Search Capabilities:

You can search for movies by title, actor, director or synopsis. You can also browse through 20 genres or a huge list of specialty categories like “1001 Movies you must see before you die” or  “Meryl Streep Musts.”

Summary:

Cafédvd's most unique lists and selections are very entertaining and they highlight great, yet often forgotten films. However, to compete with the larger and more popular companies the postage fees, due dates and late fees have to go.
